Open Group: Māra Kai

Have you always wanted to grow your own vegetables?

Come along and help grow our community garden and learn about establishing the upkeep of Māra Kai in your own home.

For the past five years, He Waka Tapu has been cultivating māra kai across three sites in Canterbury, providing wholesome food for the local community through our pātaka kai at the Pages Rd. entrance.

As part of our commitment to community well-being, we've expanded our initiatives to include a dedicated Garden Wellness Program. This program not only harvests, stores, and distributes seeds but also offers educational sessions for hapori (community).

Here's what the Garden Wellness Program entails:

  1. Seed Management: We allocate a dedicated storage area for seeds, ensuring a consistent supply for our community.

  2. Education Sessions: Join our open group sessions designed to educate whānau on the art of seed harvesting and storage. Learn valuable skills to cultivate your own thriving garden.

  3. Seed Distribution: Utilizing the principles of pātaka kai, we establish convenient seed distribution options for hapori, making it easier for everyone to access and benefit from the program.

Our Māra Kai Program is an integral part of Whai Rawatia te Oranga (Pursue the wealth of health), our holistic health pursuit initiative. Open groups create a space of papa kainga ahi kā, a pā (a place where you feel connected and comfortable) to strengthen your hauora. The groups contribute towards stregthening your Taha Wairua (Spiritual), Taha Tinana (Physical), Taha Whānau (Family and Social) and Taha Hinengaro (Mental and Emotional) wellbeing.

By participating in our program, you contribute to the enhancement of your Taha Wairua (Spiritual), Taha Tinana (Physical), Taha Whānau (Family and Social), and Taha Hinengaro (Mental and Emotional), as outlined in the Te Whare Tapa Whā health model.

Join us in cultivating a healthier, connected community through the joys of gardening. Let's grow together!
