“Ia malu lou sā. Folau i lagimā – A well-grounded self, is a successful self.”

On Wednesday, 5th June, He Waka Tapu proudly celebrated Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa – Samoa Language Week 2025, welcoming whānau, schools, and community into a vibrant space filled with alaga, laughter, cultural pride, and deep reflection. This year’s theme reminded us that when we are grounded in identity, language, and culture, we are better equipped to navigate life’s challenges, much like a well-crafted ocean-going va’a (canoe), built to withstand the tides.

The day began with a warm fa’afeiloaiga, followed by a heartfelt lotu amata from Pastor Ivan and the singing of the Samoan national anthem. Our MCs kept the energy high, guiding the crowd through interactive activities using new Samoan words from a custom glossary prepared by our marketing team.

Performances from Te Aratai College brought the spirit of Samoa to life. Their voices and movements reminded us of the beauty of intergenerational connection and cultural expression.

Our Tupulaga Panel — featuring leaders and student reps from Te Aratai & Haeata shared honest and inspiring talanoa on identity, leadership, and the importance of language in grounding their sense of self. A presentation, featuring Luamanuvae Toma, offered a deeper look into the Fonofale model and how cultural frameworks support Pasifika wellbeing.

Between panels and performances, the MCs continued to engage the crowd through language games and icebreakers, reinforcing key upu and helping to normalise the use of Gagana Samoa in everyday spaces.

The mea’ai Samoa, prepared with care by our kaimahi and community, featured umu, sapasui, kale, oka, and dessert, offering a delicious end to a day rich in culture and connection.

Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa 2025 reminded us of the strength that comes from being grounded, in culture, language, and community. Whether fluent speakers or just beginning their journey with Samoan, all who attended left feeling inspired and more connected to the richness of Gagana Samoa.

A massive fa’afetai tele lava to all who supported this event, from our performers and panellists to the kaitautoko team and our beautiful manuhiri. Your presence made this celebration one to remember.
