He Waka Tapu Celebrates Matariki at New Brighton Beach!

Our morning began with karakia timatanga led by kaumātua, whaiora and kaimahi setting the tone for the morning. Members from the Whai Ora programme, took part in conducting karakia and karanga, guided by Tiana Te Moana who has built sessions into our waiata open group sharing the whakapapa and tikanga of Matariki and what it means to all of us, both individually and collectively.

At 5.30 am, the fire was lit, symbolising the light of Matariki and Atua. Looking on towards the eastern horizon to observe and reflect on the Matariki star cluster, sharing whakaaro about the significance of each star in the cluster.

The hautapu was unveiled at 7.00 am, accompanied by offerings to the stars, karakia for guidance, and gratitude for the year ahead. as it concluded, attendees recited a closing prayer, shared hot chocolate and cacao, and took part in sand art on the beach—placing positive words and intentions, and reflecting on our roles as kaitiaki.

Tahu News were present to document the event and conduct interviews, capturing the significance of community events like this to bring us all together.

This Hautapu at New Brighton Beach was a powerful celebration and reflection for both us as kaimahi in the space we work in, for whānau and community, marking Matariki as a time of reflection, hope, and renewal for the year ahead.

We thank the community for joining us, and feel positive and refreshed for the work ahead.
