Wai July: Pressing Pause, Backing the Bros, Reclaiming Hauora!
03 / 07 / 2025
This July, tāne Māori across the motu are stepping up and stepping back, pressing pause on waipiro and choosing wai (water) instead. It’s all part of Wai July, a new kaupapa led by Hāpai Te Hauora encouraging tāne to go alcohol-free for the month.

"A month to reset, swap out waipiro for wai māori"
Wai July isn’t just about giving something up. It’s about what you stand to gain: clarity, connection, discipline, and the opportunity to reflect on how alcohol shows up in your life, and whether it still deserves a place there.
At He Waka Tapu, we tautoko this kaupapa fully. Our mahi in the AOD (alcohol and other drugs) space has shown us the long-term impact alcohol harm can have on individuals, whānau and communities.
We’ve also seen the strength in choosing a new path, one that prioritises hauora, support, and mana-enhancing choices.
As Jessikha Makoare, General Manager at Hāpai Te Hauora, puts it:
“This isn’t just about going alcohol free. It’s about creating a supportive space for tāne to choose themselves, back their mates, and reflect on the role alcohol plays in their lives.”
He Kaupapa mō te Hauora
Māori men are still overrepresented in alcohol-related harm stats — from long-term health conditions to violence and mental distress. Wai July offers a reset: a chance to show leadership, tautoko your brothers, and move intentionally towards better habits and clearer pathways.
Whether you’re doing this for your health, your whānau, or to prove to yourself that you can — Wai July is about showing up. For yourself, and for those you care about.
How Does It Work?
- Sign up: It’s free and easy
- Go alcohol-free for July
- Get support: Weekly check-ins, kōrero and tips
- Bring your bros: Join as a group for added accountability
- Stay solid: Reflect, reconnect and reset
- Team up: Weekly prizes up for grabs, food trucks, kai vouchers, recovery sessions and more
Ambassadors like Chaz Brown are hosting Sunday morning sessions in Tāmaki Makaurau, with run clubs, mobility work, and kōrero, proving this kaupapa is more than just discipline, it’s about connection.
Why It Matters
At He Waka Tapu, we believe every tāne deserves the space and support to choose themselves, to reflect, reset and walk a path that strengthens their tinana, hinengaro, wairua and whānau. Wai July is one of many kaupapa helping us get there, together.
We encourage our whānau to jump on board, whether as individuals, friend groups, or workplace crews. If you’re looking for a sign to make a change or support someone else on their hauora journey, this might be it.
Back your bros. Reclaim your hauora. Choose wai this July.
