Today right here on site at He Waka Tapu we proudly celebrated Uike Lea Faka-Tonga – Tongan Language Week 2025, with staff, whānau, and community all gathering to honour Tongan language, culture, and identity.

This year’s theme reminds us that our language is a foundation of connection, carrying wisdom and values that guide us through life’s tides, such as the waka does for all the desendents of our pacific nations. Its always a beautiful thing to sit back and admire our similarities, whether through language, food or cultural practice, the ties that bind us are often where we find common ground for talanoa.

The celebration began with a shared meal of traditional Tongan kai, prepared by our kitchen team, bringing everyone together around food that holds cultural significance.

We were then treated to a vibrant performance by students from Haeta Community Campus, whose energy and pride in their culture filled the room.

Events like these highlight the strength of our Pasifika communities and the importance of creating space to celebrate and uplift language and cultural identity.

Mālō ‘aupito to all in attendance and our amazing kaimahi who made this occasion so special.
