Top Up Together: A Collective Approach to Wellbeing.

Encouraging us all to connect with ourselves, our whānau and our communities to collectively bringing “Five Ways to Wellbeing” into our everyday lives. It’s a theme that aligns beautifully with Te Whare Tapa Whā, reminding us that true wellbeing comes from balance across all aspects of life Taha Tinana (physical wellbeing), Taha Wairua (spiritual wellbeing), Taha Hinengaro (mental wellbeing), Taha Whānau (social / community wellbeing) and our connection and care of whenua (land).

We understand that mental health isn’t just the absence of illness or symptoms. It’s about feeling good, functioning well, and feeling connected. While simple actions like going for a walk or reaching out to someone can at times, seem small, or unhelpful especially when times are tough. They don’t solve everything, but they do help us all build strength and connection.

Of course, we still need quality mental health services, strong support from whānau and community, and we must address the bigger issues, racism, poverty, violence, and discrimination. These are real barriers to wellbeing. Promoting mental health means advocating for a society where these barriers no longer exist.

At He Waka Tapu, we see this every day. As a kaupapa Māori health service, our mahi is grounded in Te Whare Tapa Whā. We support whānau holistically, helping people top up their wellbeing in ways that are meaningful, culturally safe, and collective.

Together, we can build lives worth living — not just by treating illness, but by nurturing wellbeing in every part of our communities. Follow along with us this week as we share stories, services, community voices, events and more. And work together in supporting each other on these journeys.
