He Waka Tapu was proud to once again take part in the Christchurch Walking Festival with our 2026 Travis Wetland Whānau Hīkoi at Ōruapaeroa. This year's event was held on Sunday, 19 April 2026, bringing together whānau and community for a gentle 3.4 km return walk through the beautiful and culturally significant wetlands.
The day began with Matua Isaac opening the event in karakia, setting a warm and grounded tone for the hīkoi ahead. Matua Isaac and Whaea Taryn then guided participants on a culturally rich journey around Ōruapaeroa, sharing kōrero about the whakapapa of the area and the importance of the wetlands for mana whenua. Their leadership helped deepen our collective understanding and connection to this taonga.
Around 40 whānau and community members joined us on the day, contributing to a relaxed and uplifting atmosphere. We were fortunate to enjoy beautiful weather, which made the hīkoi and the activities that followed even more enjoyable.
After the walk, everyone gathered for a shared BBQ, with sausages and patties supplied by Peter Timbs. Tamariki took part in an Easter egg hunt, adding plenty of excitement and smiles. We were also joined by the Electoral Commission and our own Wāhine Ora kaimahi, who provided information about voting and the wider services offered by He Waka Tapu. Our grocery hamper giveaway also proved a hit, with one lucky winner guessing within 12 cents of the actual total!
As always, protecting the taiao remains a priority at Ōruapaeroa. We appreciate everyone respecting the guidelines around no bikes, scooters, skateboards, or dogs in the wetland area to help safeguard the wildlife.
The Christchurch Walking Festival ran from 28 March to 19 April 2026, offering more than 30 walks across Waitaha. Our hīkoi continues to be a valued part of this annual celebration of movement, connection, and community.
Ngā mihi to Christchurch city council for their tautoko and all who attended and supported this kaupapa.
We look forward to walking alongside you again next year.
